The importance of professional dental cleaning

Why you should visit the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning.

Even if you brush your teeth three times a day and floss daily, there are bacteria and tartar deposits that can only be removed with a professional dental cleaning.

Difference between home and professional cleaning. Brushing and flossing remove soft plaque from the tooth surface. However, when plaque mineralizes it becomes tartar (dental calculus), which can only be removed with specialized instruments. If not removed, tartar can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth loss.

What does a professional cleaning include? First, an initial examination where the dentist examines gums, teeth and soft tissues. Then, tartar removal with ultrasound and curettes. After that, polishing with special paste to remove stains. Finally, fluoride application to strengthen enamel.

How often? For most patients, every 6 months is recommended. Patients with a history of periodontitis or diabetes may need visits every 3-4 months.

Additional benefits: early detection of cavities, abscesses and other conditions, diagnosis of precancerous lesions in the mouth, and personalized advice on brushing technique.
